COMMUNICATIONS
     Communication services are vital in the management, economy and social affairs of the State. For smooth and safe communication, Myanma communication service, under the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs is carrying out Postal Service. Telegraph Service and Telephone Service as their three main tasks.
POSTAL, SERVICE
    Postal Service is now running 1294 post offices throughout the country.
    Local Express Postal Parcel Service was introduced in Yangon and Mandalay since 1 April 1992 and its services are now extented to 129 townships. communication01
    Foreign Express Postal Parcel Service is also being carried out between Yangon and Singapore, Yangon and Bangkok, Yangon and Korea vice versa. Myanmar DHL Limited, joint venture of Myanmar Communication Service and DHL World-wide Express B.V of Netherlands was contracted and set up on September 23, 1996 and International Package Service is being carried out between Yangon and 227 foreign countries.
     Foreign dispatch, package of dispatch and postal parcels from Myanmar are sent and delivered all over the world through 33 countries. International mail is delivered to Myanmar through 59 countries.
     Express Money Order Service has been carried out by Fax machines, since 1991 and now it is extended to 70 towns.
     Stamps reflecting modern and historical events have been issued since 1988-89 and up to now twenty-one special issues and one regular issue have been distributed.
TELEGRAPH SERVICE
    The Telegraph Service has opened 440 telegraph offices all over the country including the border areas. By means of satellite links international telegraph service is being carried out through Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, India and England.
     Computerized telegraph service was started in Yangon and Mandalay on 1 April 1993 and now it is extended to 65 towns. communication03
     Public Domestic Fax Service began on 1 September 1992 and now Fax Service is available in 88 towns including Yangon and Mandalay.
    Oversea Fax Service is available at Yangon Telegraph Office and it can contact with 89 other countries.
TELEPHONE SERVICE
     Telephone Service has opened 557 manual and auto exchanges throughout the country and 277807 telephones are now in use. Among these exchanges, a cellular exchange each in Yangon and Mandalay and the most modern system in South-East Asia, CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access Wireless Loop System) exchange in Yangon are included. A modern telephone system, public card phones have been used in big cities including Yangon and Mandalay and altogether 286 are now in use.
     In trunk call communication Service 165 Microwave stations, 49 microwave contacts and 4359 channels have been set up and installed an 185 relay stations and 89 carried contacts have been put up.
     For the convenient communications in far-flung towns in Myanmar Naing-Ngan, Local Satellite Communication System was built in 1991, and ground stations are constructed and used in Haka, Myitkyina, Bhamo, Muse, Lashio, Tachileik, Kyaingtone, Kalaw, Khamti, Tamu, Yangon, Buthitaung, Myawady, Myeik and Kawthaung.
     One of the worldwide modern communication systems, auto-radio telephone system was first introducd in Yangon on 9 December 1994 and it has been installed and used in Ma-U-Bin, Bagan Nyaung-U Pha-an, Mandalay, Mawlamyine, Shinmataung in Yesagyo township and Hinthada. Another modern computerized communication system, DECT (Digital European Cordless Telecommunication) radio telephone System has been in operation in Twantay, Mandalay, Pakokku and Monywa. communication02
     A Data Communication System has been installed and used in Yangon and Mandalay since 12 November 1997 By means of this system, local and foreign bank accounts can be accurately and swiftly exchanged. Using auto money teller machines, money can be drawn from banks. Daily sale and commodity balance sheets from retail shops and sale centres can be swiftly exchanged and checked. Including passenger transportation, commodity transportation, hotel and tourism service, Booking, Reservation and Inquiry can be made very quickly. Paying tax can also be easily and quickly checked and accepted anywhere, connecting with central department. Over 2500 Electronic Service (E-mail) and Internet Service Provider are available now.
      Overseas Communication Service has to rely on grade B satellite ground station in Toegyaunggalay, Yangon. As market-oriented economic system is practised in the country, it is vital to be able to communicate with foreign countries conveniently. So grade A satellite communication ground station was constructed and used in Pyinhtaungkyaung Thanlyin township on March 4, 1994. Nowadays overseas telephone channels are extended to 828. As a result, overseas communication service is available swiftly and conveniently. It has links with many nations through Intelsat Satellite and Thaicom Satellite.
     At present, oversea communication service has to rely upon the only existing satellite communication system. So arrangements are being made to run a new international communication line, using SEA-WE 3 submarine Cable.
    Asia-Europe Submarine cable service starts in Europe and will connect Japan and Korea, passing through the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Suez canal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. Through over 10000 channels, 34 nations including Myanmar can make direct connection. Now governments from other countries which are interested in this project are making investment and thus governments from 64 nations are taking part in this project.
